International Day of Persons Living With Disability.

December 3rd: Celebration of the International Day of People with Disability.

"The aim of Disability Day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people, as well as raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life, from economic, to political, to social and cultural. Disability Day is not concerned exclusively with either mental or physical disabilities, but rather encompasses all known disabilities, from Autism to Down Syndrome to Multiple Sclerosis".

Early this week, I shared this photograph on my IG page of a 15year old girl who stopped going to school after basic 6, due to her 'disability'. We were invited to her house, to discuss how we could assist her back to school. She's been out of school for 5years! No mobility aid (wheelchair) whatsoever! She is always indoor while her siblings go to school. She seeks to go back, but how do we help her as most of the schools around (private) do not have facilities for persons with disability? Would home schooling work well for her? Government owned schools for children with special needs is not a go area, as the distance is pretty far. Now, I have been thinking...about the statistics of children who are out of school due to disability? How many 'Marys' are out there, that need mobility aid appliances such as wheelchair, but cannot afford one? Today is another day to draw our mind back to all those who are living with one form of disability or the other, how do we fully integrate them into the society, in our schools? They have the right to education, to life, to good health, too.

Already, we have spoken with an organization, a wheelchair for her would costs some N40,000. Already, a friend on IG and FB, has donated N10,000. (N30,000 more to go). Hopefully, we find an answer to getting her back to school soon. Meanwhile, kindly let us know if you'd be willing to support her education or if you have a better idea on how to go about helping her! #ThereIsAbilityInDisability💪💪#ItCanBeDone#AdvocacyIsAllIDo 🙏😮

Happy World Disability Day! #HWDD #IDPLWD
